Keep your yard healthy, green, and storm-ready this season
Summer in the Midwest —no matter the meteorologist— can and will be unpredictable.
We have heat waves, humidity, and pop-up storms all in one week. That kind of weather takes a toll on your yard. But with the right care, your lawn and landscape can stay resilient all season long.
Summer lawn care made easy—for our friends across the QC
1. Water Wisely
Even with summer rain, consistent watering is key—especially during dry spells. The best time to water is early morning, so the grass has time to absorb moisture before the midday sun hits. Water deeply 2–3 times per week rather than a little every day to encourage deeper root growth.
2. Mow with Care
Raise your mower blades during the summer. Taller grass helps shade the soil, retain moisture, and crowd out weeds. For most Midwest lawns, a height of 3 to 3.5 inches is ideal this time of year.
Bonus tip: Keep your mower blades sharp to prevent tearing the grass.
3. Stay Ahead of Weeds and Disease
Warm, humid weather creates a perfect breeding ground for turf diseases like brown patch or dollar spot. And weeds like crabgrass and clover tend to thrive if the lawn is stressed. A consistent mowing, watering, and fertilizing routine goes a long way—but if things get out of hand, we’re just a call away.
4. Mulch for Moisture Control
Mulch isn’t just for looks—it insulates plant roots, locks in moisture, and helps control weeds in your beds and borders. Freshen up your mulch once or twice a year, especially if it’s thinning out from storms or heavy rains.
5. Prepare for Storms
Stormy weather is part of the Midwest summer. Make sure your gutters and drainage areas are clear, and consider trimming back overgrown trees or shrubs that could be vulnerable in high winds.
